How is Second Step® SEL for Adults changing with this update?
Since its initial introduction in May 2021, Second Step SEL for Adults has been described as containing four foundational modules. The first two modules were included with the 2021 release. The March 31, 2022 update introduces Module 3: Equity & Belonging. Module 4 will be added later this year.

Has this module been field-tested?
Second Step® SEL for Adults Module 3: Equity & Belonging has been extensively field-tested in schools and with educators across the country. We’ve also worked closely with professional development and equity experts to further refine the content. Since March 2021, we’ve conducted multiple iterations of field tests in six elementary and secondary schools.
We’re making continuous improvements based on collected feedback. Input from educators was invaluable in helping us design a program that works for them. Feedback also led to the creation of in-depth resources leaders can use to support their staff as they have equity conversations.
How can this module help me build a more positive and equitable environment for all students and staff?
Module 3 focuses on belonging as a path to equity. Helping every educator and student feel like they belong is the first step toward creating a more equitable school environment because it gives everyone an opportunity to feel safe, participate, and thrive.
In this module, educators reflect on their own background, beliefs, assumptions, and the aspects of themselves that they feel most define who they are. They consider how these factors affect their own sense of belonging at school and explore how their colleagues’ and students’ feelings of belonging are also affected by their own life stories. They learn concrete, practical routines that can help foster colleagues’ and students’ sense of belonging. They also practice a routine to help them discover inequities that may exist in their school that weren’t visible to them before and learn ways to begin to create an inclusive and safe environment for everyone.
People have more opportunities to flourish when they feel a sense of belonging, inclusion, and being valued.
