A Spanish-language version of Second Step® Out-of-School Time, Second Step® Programa extraescolar, is available. Visit SecondStep.org/ost for more information.
Is Second Step® Programa extraescolar only available to clients who have purchased Second Step® Out-of-School Time?
You have the option of purchasing Second Step Out-of-School Time in English or Spanish or purchasing both the English-language and Spanish-language versions. We’re committed to offering our clients the flexibility to serve every child in their communities and further every child’s social-emotional development.
Does Second Step® Programa extraescolar cost extra?
Yes. The Spanish-language program costs the same as the English-language version. It consists of the same materials, including 12 durable, spiral-bound notebooks.
GENERAL
Why were these languages selected for translation?
The languages selected for translation are among the most common non-English languages spoken at home by English-language learners, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
Which regional preference is represented in the Spanish-language materials?
Spanish-language materials utilize general usage conventions for the United States Spanish-speaking market.
Which written form of Chinese is represented in the translated materials?
Translated materials in both simplified and traditional written Chinese are included in the program.
Which dialect of Chinese is represented in the translated materials?
The materials are translated into Mandarin Chinese, which is the most commonly spoken Chinese dialect worldwide. There are many other Chinese dialects, and we understand there may be specific needs for materials tailored for another dialect, such as Cantonese. We provide written materials in both simplified and traditional characters so families can choose the option they prefer.
Can I purchase a Spanish-language version of the Second Step® Elementary and Second Step® Middle School digital programs without the English-language versions?
Spanish-language materials are not offered separately for the Second Step Elementary and Second Step Middle School digital programs.
Do Spanish-language materials and materials in other languages for the Second Step® Elementary and Second Step® Middle School digital programs cost extra?
Materials for the Second Step Elementary and Second Step Middle School digital programs in Spanish and other languages have no additional cost. However, there is an additional cost for printed translated materials.
Are there plans to add materials in more languages for Second Step® Elementary classroom kits, Second Step® Early Learning, the Second Step® Child Protection Unit, or the Second Step® Bullying Prevention Unit?
As Spanish-language materials are already available for classroom kit-based programs, we’ve prioritized translation of the Second Step® Elementary and Second Step® Middle School digital programs. There are currently no plans to add additional translated materials to any of our classroom kit-based programs.

This online experience is loaded with videos, resources, and useful advice to help teens and the adults in their lives address hot-button topics. The site complements Second Step Middle School both as a stand-alone parent resource and in connection with Second Step Middle School classroom activities.
** As a family resource to complement the Second Step® Child Protection Unit, the Early, Open, Often (in English) and Abierto y a menudo (in Spanish) websites are free and publicly available for parents and caregivers to get facts about child sexual abuse, learn tips for talking with kids, find resources for responding to and reporting abuse, and explore a prevention toolkit. The site features a video series that’s been shown to increase parents’ motivation to discuss the topic with their children.
