How Do I Use the Detailed Lesson Report CSV?
Missing Grades or Incorrect User Count
Reports Basics
What’s included in the Lesson Progress Reports?
The Lesson Progress Reports consist of two parts:
- A Two-Week Snapshot Summary of classes that viewed lessons and the number of lessons completed, which is on the Lesson Progress Reports page
- A downloadable Detailed Lesson Report CSV document, which you can access using the Download Detailed Lesson Report CSV link in the upper right-hand corner of the Lesson Progress Reports page
Do the Lesson Progress Reports include information about training progress and advisory activity use?
No. This version of the Lesson Progress Reports only provides data on lesson use.
What’s the date range on the Two-Week Snapshot Summaries?
The Two-Week Snapshot Summary starts 14 days before the current date and time and ends with the current date and time. Any class progress that occurred during those 14 days will appear in the summary.

What happens to my class data on June 24?
Your data will automatically be reset at the end of June each year. In 2022, the reset will occur on June 24. To ensure you get your final school year data, download your last report before June 24.
Why do I see some classes associated with more than one license on multiple-license Detailed Lesson Report CSVs?
The teacher is showing up on multiple Lesson Progress Reports because they’ve been assigned to multiple licenses. It appears the system doesn’t know which license/school the class belongs to.
Access/Privacy
Who can see the Lesson Progress Reports?
Staff who have Second Step Administrator roles will have access to the Lesson Progress Reports through the Reports page link on their Second Step Dashboard.
How can I give someone access to Lesson Progress Reports?
Existing users must be granted a Second Step Administrator role to see reports. New users must be added to the license as an Administrator.
How can I remove someone’s access to Lesson Progress Reports?
To be able to access the Lesson Progress Reports, the person must have an Administrator role for the Second Step license for which they can see lesson progress. To remove the Administrator role, the person must be removed from the license. This means they can no longer access the program. If the user still needs to teach, they must be added back to the license as with a Teacher role. Any previous classes and progress they had before you removed their Administrator role will still be accessible.
Can I download the Lesson Progress Reports?
You can download the Detailed Lesson Report for each of your Second Step licenses in a CSV (comma-separated values/plain text) format using the “Download Detailed Lesson Report (CSV)” link in the upper right section of the page.
Can I email the Detailed Lesson Report CSV?
Check your district privacy policy about emailing these reports, because they contain personally identifiable information (PII) about educators.
How Do I Use the Detailed Lesson Report CSV?
Terminology
What Does “CSV” stand for? What’s a CSV file?
CSV stands for “comma-separated values,” and a CSV is a plain text file containing data broken up by commas. When the CSV file is opened in a spreadsheet software program, such as Microsoft Excel, the commas, also called delimiters, tell the software which data to put into which columns or rows.
What’s a “class” in the Lesson Progress Reports?
An educator must create a class to teach or preview the Second Step program. A class is counted in the Individual Grade and All Grades summaries as soon as it’s created, regardless of whether the educator uses it to teach Second Step lessons or just preview them.
What’s a “staff member” in the Lesson Progress Reports?
A staff member is a person from your site who has been granted Administrator or Teacher access to your Second Step license. This includes users who have been invited, but who may not have registered or created classes yet.
Because “all users” in the All Grades summary includes those educators actively using the program and those only invited to the program, the total number of users may not equal the sum of the individual users in each grade summary. For example, if only five educators have created Grade 6 classes, but seven users were invited to the program, the All Grades summary will show seven users.
What does “user status” mean in the Detailed Lesson Report CSV?
This status reflects whether the user has created a Second Step account. “Active” means the user has created an account. “N/A” means they’ve been invited to the license and haven’t created an account yet.
What does “most recent lesson viewed on” mean?
This is the date when a lesson was last launched for that particular class.
What do the lesson progress statuses mean?
A lesson that’s “not started” hasn’t been opened. A lesson that’s “in progress” has been opened, but not marked done. A lesson that’s “completed” has been marked done. “N/A” lessons aren’t available to that grade.
What does “N/A” mean in the class name column?
“N/A” means the user hasn’t created a class yet. All lessons for that user will also be marked N/A.
Missing Grades or Incorrect User Count
Why doesn’t the number of users add up correctly?
If educators have been invited to the program but haven’t created classes yet, the All Grades user count will be higher than the sum of the individual-grade user counts.
Why are some of my grades missing?
Grades only appear when there are classes created to teach or preview that grade. As teachers create classes across more grades, they will appear here.
What does “mark done” mean?
Educators should select the Mark Lesson Done button to indicate when they’ve finished teaching a lesson. Each lesson in which an educator has selected Mark Lesson Done in the past 14 days will be counted in the Two-Week Snapshot Summaries.
How do I mark a lesson done?
Select the Mark Lesson Done button in the top right-hand corner of the lesson presentation.
What to Do with the Data
Progress at my school is lower than expected. What should I do?
Download the Detailed Lesson Report CSV and look at the progress across all your teachers and lessons.
If many of the lessons are “in progress,” encourage your educators to mark a lesson done when they’re done teaching it instead of leaving it in progress.
If many of the lessons are “not started,” check in with your educators to make sure they’re using the Teach button to start their lesson when they teach it, and not the Preview button.
What data should I be looking for, and what should I be comparing it with? How many lessons should my teachers be teaching?
Our recommendation is that schools teach Second Step lessons once per week, in the order provided. When looking at the lesson progress across classes in the Detailed Lesson Report CSV, you should see that the lessons are only in progress once previous lessons are complete. We provide a pacing guide that school leadership can use to schedule Second Step lessons for the year. The leadership team should track class progress against the pacing guide set by the school.
What can I say about the Lesson Progress Reports for a grant?
The Lesson Progress Report provides data on the number of program users and the number of lessons completed per school. This information can be useful for grant reports or funder updates.
License administrators use can this data at any time during the school year to support quarterly or annual grant reporting. To report lesson progress to date:
- Download the Detailed Lesson Report CSV.
- Open the file using Microsoft Excel.
- Use the autosum feature by selecting the cells in the Lessons Completed column. The sum will appear in the bottom right corner.
Your data will automatically be reset at the end of June each year. In 2022, the reset will occur on June 24. To ensure you get your final school year data, download your last report before June 24.
